🧬 Health, Genetics and Ethical Breeding for Miniature Dachshunds

We believe that healthy, happy dogs make the best companions. That’s why all of our miniature Dachshunds undergo Embark DNA testing and OFA health screenings—to ensure their well-being, genetic soundness, and overall excellence.

Our goal is to produce puppies that meet the AKC standard.
First and foremost, we breed for health and temperament, followed by conformation and color. The care and dedication we put into our breeding program ensure that your new companion is not only vibrant in health but also full of personality and love.
While our primary color focus is on the beautiful cream coat color, we embrace the delightful surprises that nature brings—welcoming a variety of colors, shades, and patterns. Cream may hold a special place in our hearts, but we truly celebrate the unique beauty of every Dachshund we raise.
Join us on this journey through a miniature Dachshund wonderland—where wagging tails, joyful hearts, and endless love await!

The truth about IVDD

Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) is considered largely unavoidable in miniature dachshunds because of genetic and anatomical factors that are inherent to the breed. Here's a breakdown of why:

🧬 1. Genetics (Chondrodystrophy)

Miniature dachshunds are chondrodystrophic dogs, meaning they have a genetic form of dwarfism that gives them their characteristic short legs and long bodies. This condition is linked to a mutation in the FGF4 gene. This same gene mutation causes premature degeneration of intervertebral discs — the cushioning pads between the vertebrae of the spine.
The degeneration can begin as early as 1 year of age, even in dogs that appear completely healthy. Key point: The trait that makes dachshunds look the way they do is the same trait that makes IVDD a serious risk.

🏋️‍♂️ 2. Anatomy (Long back + Short legs)

The dachshund's elongated spine and relatively weak support from short legs create more mechanical stress on their vertebral column, especially during:Jumping off furniture
Climbing stairs
Rapid twisting movementsThis increases the chance of disc herniation, even without trauma.

📈 3. Prevalence

Up to 25% of dachshunds will develop IVDD during their lifetime — one of the highest rates among all breeds.
It’s so common that some veterinarians call it a “breed-related disorder” rather than a separate disease.

🧪 4. Breeding practices

Despite the known risk, IVDD is not consistently screened in breeding programs. There are tools like IVDD grading via spinal x-rays (calcification scoring) or genetic testing that can help reduce risk, but they are not widely adopted.
The breed standard, emphasizing the long back and short legs, reinforces the genetic traits that predispose to IVDD.

✅ Can you prevent it entirely?

No. But you can reduce risk with:Maintaining a healthy weight (avoids added stress on the spine)
Using ramps/stairs instead of jumping
Avoiding high-impact activities
Providing spinal support when carrying the dog
Early vet intervention at signs of pain or weaknessSome breeders are also working with IVDD screening programs, but this is still rare.

Summary:

IVDD is largely unavoidable in miniature dachshunds because their genetic makeup (chondrodystrophy) and body shape make them naturally predisposed. It’s the trade-off of the traits that make the breed so unique.
If you have a dachshund or are thinking of getting one, awareness and proactive care are the best tools you have.

"We could not be happier that we found Patricia! We just took home a beautiful shaded cream girl who is everything we hoped for and more. Patricia was so communicative, answering my barrage of questions and sending tons of photo and video updates! When we picked up our girl, we met Patricia’s other dogs who were so well behaved and absolutely adorable. Their indoor and outdoor play areas are amazing. It felt good to see that our puppy was raised in such a loving and nurturing home. Patricia provided us vet records and a goody bag of puppy supplies. Our puppy’s temperament is a testament to the way she was bred and raised. She is the sweetest, most loving pup who already loves her crate and is picking up tricks and commands so quickly. I would recommend Patricia to all of my friends and family in a heartbeat!! Thank you, thank you!"

I truly cannot say enough about Patricia and her breeding program. We found her through a referral while searching for a breeder who prioritizes health, temperament, and structure, and she exceeds every standard in those areas. Patricia goes above and beyond to educate prospective owners on the genetics behind her lines and the critical role data-driven breeding plays in producing healthier, stronger puppies.

Mini dachshunds are a dwarf breed, which makes responsible, intentional breeding essential to a puppy’s long-term health and quality of life. Patricia is, without exaggeration, the only breeder we’ve encountered who approaches this responsibility with such depth of care, knowledge, and integrity.

Beyond breeding, she has been an incredible resource throughout every stage of our puppy’s transition — from those early newborn days to teething, potty training, and everything in between. Many of her adult dogs live with her, allowing her to see firsthand how her lines mature over time, which speaks volumes about the thoughtfulness behind her program.

What truly sets Patricia apart is how deeply she cares about where her puppies go. She takes the time to know each family personally and is intentional about placing puppies only with owners she trusts and believes are the right fit. This isn’t just breeding — it’s stewardship.

I only wish all breeders operated with the same level of ethics, care, and heart as Patricia. The world would be a far better place for puppies and their future families if they did!
